Geektown Radio 105: Composer Sage Lewis, UK TV News & UK TV Air Date Info!
As we nudge ever closer to Spring, on this week's show we not only have a bunch of renewal information for various tv shows, plus all the usual tv news, and an interview with composer Sage Lewis, who scored the film Operator, which you can watch right now on Netflix UK! Operator, which was one of Indiewire's 7 Hidden Gems of SXSW last year, is a dark comedy about love and technology, with Indiewire highlighting it as a "an ideal humorous mixture of contemporary challenges and intimate conundrums that fit right in at SXSW.? It stars Martin Starr from Silicon Valley, and sees him play a programmer, who uses his wife's (Mae Whitman) for his company's customer service app. However, trouble starts to arise, when he starts to rely more on the digital version of his wife, than his flesh & blood, actual wife... Sage also wrote the score for a unique interactive VR piece called The Surrogate, crafted a beautiful score that immerses participants in the point of view of the protagonist. The user controls the story, leading up to a dramatic climax. Empowered by Sage?s music, the film?s breakthrough innovations in AR/VR storytelling led to its nomination for SXSW?s Interactive Innovation Award in AR/VR. We're a little bit late this week, but to make up for it, we have a brilliant interview with Barry Robison, the Production Designer for the 6 x Oscar Nominated Hacksaw Ridge! HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (BAFTA winner and Golden Globe nominee Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour. In the interview Barry talks about what it was like building everything from battlefields to bunkers, barracks, Japanese farmhouses, and even an entire cliff face, which plays a significant role in the film! Geektown Radio : Episode 65 ? Interviews with Ratchet & Clank Composer Evan Wise, And Fargo Composer Jeff Russo, plus

This week it's a slightly different show as i'm on my own. So to make up for that we have, not one, but two interviews!

First interview is with Ratchet & Clank composer Evan Wise. The animated feature is based on the famed action-oriented video game series, and follows the adventures of Ratchet (a feline-like character who is a mechanic) and Clank (a diminutive, sentimental robot) as they travel through the universe fighting evil forces. Rosario Dawson, Paul Giamatti and John Goodman star in the Kevin Munroe directed flick.

Ratchet & Clank is Evan's first feature, and the self proclaimed "traditional symphonist" used a traditional orchestral approach to bring out the nuance of the characters while staying within the genre of an animated family film. The Ratchet and Clank Movie soundtrack, which is now available, guides listeners through the story with a fluid sonic palette that will has you on the edge of your seat with action one minute and overcome with emotions the next.

The Second interview is with Emmy and Grammy nominated Fargo composer Jeff Russo. Jeff has been on the show a number of times before, and we had a chance to catch up with him about his work on Fargo Season 2 (soundtrack is available here on Amazon, and here on Spotify), and on Fargo Season 3 which will star Ewan McGregor. We also talk about his work on Curtis "50 Cent? Geektown Radio : Episode 56 ? Interview with Fil Eisler, plus TV Premiere Updates & Air Date Info!

It's a shortened show this week, due to Dave being rather under the weather, but to make up for that, we do have a great interview with friend of Geektown - Fil Eisler.

Fil is the man behind the music for the mega-hit TV show Empire, along with the recently departed Revenge, and Lifetime?s UnReal. He's also scored the recently released Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson movie 'How To Be Single', and is currently working on a movie adaptation of the 70's cop show CHiP's starring Dax Shepard and Antman's Michael Peña, and an epic scifi film called The Titan starring Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Orange Is The New Black's Taylor Schilling.

Most recently though, one of the projects he's been involved with is 'Newtown'. An incredible documentary about the aftermath of the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 children aged between 6 and 7, and 6 staff members lost their lives to a lone gunman. Unlike a lot of films on this subject, this isn't a documentary about gun control, but about the community of Newtown where the incident happened, and how they piece their lives back together after the tragedy.

We're 40 episodes in, and once again we have a packed show for you! This week, we interview Abel Korzeniowski, the man behind the sumptuous score for Sky Atlantic's Penny Dreadful, along with lots of tv news and gaming chat with Chris.

Golden Globe Nominated composer Abel Korzeniowski recently received two Emmy nominations for his work on Sky Atlantic?s hit show "Penny Dreadful," starring Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Timothy Dalton.  Abel burst into international prominence with his lush and stirring music in Tom Ford?s "A Single Man" starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore. The Golden Globe-nominated score caught the attention of music legend Madonna, who invited Abel to write music for her feature film "W.E.," for which he received his second Golden Globe nomination. Geektown Radio : Episode 39 ? Interview with composer Jason Graves plus UK TV News, Premiere Updates & Air Date Info!

We're back with our 39th episode, and this week, along with all the usual news and air date info, we have an interview with UNTIL DAWN composer Jason Graves, who talks about the challenges of composing music for a very unique game.

Until Dawn is an interactive drama survival horror adventure game, which (for our older listener) is somewhat akin to the old 'choose your own adventure' books. When eight friends are trapped on a remote mountain retreat and things quickly turn sinister, they start to suspect they aren?t alone. Gripped by fear and with tensions in the group running high, you?ll be forced to make snap decisions that could mean life, or death, for everyone involved. Every choice you make in your terrifying search for answers ? even the seemingly trivial ones ? will carve out your own unique story. The game stars Hayden Panettiere (Heroes, Nashville), Rami Malek (Mr Robot), Brett Dalton (AoS), Peter Stormare (Arrow older Count Vertigo, Berlin in the Black List).

Jason Graves is an Academy Award-winning (BAFTA) composer who has brought his passion for music to projects such as THE ORDER: 1886 (SONY), EVOLVE (2k GAMES), TOMB RAIDER (SQUARE ENIX) and DEAD SPACE (EA). He is particularly enthusiastic about illustrating a project?s story and character arcs through the power of music. His sophisticated composition style has made his w

It's our 38th episode and we're back with Chris, and an interview with Christopher Brookmyre, author of numerous award winning novels (Quite Ugly One Morning, Boiling a Frog, All Fun And Games until Someone Loses an Eye), and writer of the video game and novel Bedlam.

Ross (aka Bedlam) is an overworked and underpaid scientist developing medical technology for corporate giant Neurosphere. In the book, one rainy Monday morning Ross volunteers as a test candidate for the new brain scanning tech ? anything to get out of the office for a few hours. But when he gets out of the scanner he discovers he?s not only escaped the office, but possibly escaped real life for good! Ross finds himself trapped in Starfire ? the violent sci-fi game he spent his teenage years playing ? with no explanation, no backup and, most terrifyingly, no way out!

For the game they are taking a slightly different perspective... a female perspective? Players will take on the role of Heather, a colleague of Ross, who is a programmer at medical scanning developer Neurosphere. There she also finds herself transported into the world of Starfire: a nineties FPS she remembers from her teen years. Searching for an explanation and a way home, she ventures beyond Starfire to discover a vast realm of interconnected game worlds documenting the evolution of the FPS genre and of video games in general.

She's is now starring as Maria Adams, alongside Andrew French, Edmund Kingsley, Jack Gordon and Joe Dixon, in Anthony Woodley?s exciting science fiction movie The Carrier.

In The Carrier, England has been overrun by a pandemic with no apparent cure. It?s only once the plane is airborne, that the survivors discover the infection has made it onto the flight with them. As the survivors begin to take sides and try to impress their desires on one another, it becomes clear they?re in as much danger from each other, as they are from the infection.

As Maria Adams in The Carrier, Karen Bryson is a far cry from the glamorous Avril she is loved for playing in Channel 4?s Shameless. Maria and her husband Kevin (Andrew French) have lost a son, but the former airport cleaners are among the fortunate few to escape the pandemic on the 747.

Geektown Radio : Episode 30 ? John Swihart Interview plus UK TV Updates & Air Date Info!

We're back this week with a full show AND an interview with Napoleon Dynamite & How I Met Your Mother composer John Swihart!

The Berkelee-trained Swihart fuses ?70s funk with electronica for the movie, providing a musical backdrop that expertly plays alongside the comedy, yet simultaneously allowing the jokes to breathe when necessary. Produced by Lorne Michaels, comedy Staten Island Summer unites SNL alums Cecily Strong, Bobby Moynihan, Fred Armisen, Will Forte, and Kate McKinnon for a hilarious coming of age comedy about two lifeguards on a mission to throw the biggest party of the summer.

Swihart has provided memorable scores for a number of coming-of-age, youth-driven projects, ranging from classic cult comedy Napoleon Dynamite, to Fox?s Red Band Society, and the Michael Cera film Youth in Revolt. Swihart scored the CBS?s landmark comedy How I Met Your Mother.

Geektown Radio : Author Richard Morgan Special!

As people have been away and tied up with work this week, it's the perfect opportunity to air an interview I did recently with the author Richard Morgan.

Richard is a sci-fi and fantasy writer, who's probably best know for his Philip K. Dick Award winning sci-fi novel Altered Carbon, which went on to spawn the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy. He's 2nd trilogy 'A Land Fit for Heroes' moved him into fantasy, and is currently being turned into an interactive gamebook by Liber Primus Games.

If you don't know Richard from his excellent novels, he also wrote the Syndicate reboot for EA in 2012, Crysis 2 for Crytek in 2011, and was largely responsible for rebooting Marvel's Black Widow with his two six issue miniseries he wrote for the character.

You can find out more about the Land Fit for Heroes gamebook here, and more about Richard here.

Geektown Radio : Special ? The Walking Dead (Panel from Birmingham Comic Con March 2015)

Once again, we're still away on holiday this week, but as I know we have a lot of Walking Dead fans out there, I thought it might be interesting to put up the audio from The Walking Dead panel we recorded back in March. We've played a few clips out on the show, but this is the whole panel with Laurie Holden (Andrea), Christian Serratos (Rosita Espinosa), and Tyler James Williams (Noah). You can see the actual video below too, but I know a lot of people will be listening to this on the way to work, and it's kinda hard to watch YouTube and drive at the same time. ;)

Normal service will be resumed next week. :)

Geektown Radio : Charlie Clouser (Wayward Pines & Nine Inch Nails) SpeciaI!

This week, as I'm away on holiday, we have an interview special with the one and only Charlie Clouser.

Charlie is a multi-instrumentalist composer, musician, producer, programmer and remix artist who has worked with some of the seminal recording artists of the last twenty years. Charlie, who was a member of Nine Inch Nails, currently scores Fox?s hit M. Night Shyamalan show Wayward Pines, starring Matt Dillon and Carla Gugino.

Charlie has scored several films and television shows, including the Saw films, which instantly became cult classics, CBS's Numb3rs and NBC's Las Vegas. Charlie also co-wrote the chilling main title theme for FX?s American Horror Story. His scores for the subsequent Saw series continue to define the films. Raw, grinding, propulsive, punctuated by incredible layers of sound and energy, they are classics in the horror genre. Charlie has also scored such films as Resident Evil: Extinction, Sony?s Pictures? The Stepfather, and The Collection.

Charlie came into prominence as a member of Nine Inch Nails from 1994-2000. Before joining the band as keyboardist/programmer, he?d already built a following with his extreme synth work and remixes for Prong, Marilyn Manson, White Zombie, and others. His dense layers of chopped up beats and grinding synth bass lines were instrumental in defining the sound of White Zombie?s double-platinum 1994

Geektown Radio Special : Amar, Akbar and Tony (Rez Kempton & Martin Delaney)

As I mentioned in the show last week, I've been doing a stack of interviews recently, and as two of them were from actors in the same movie, I though the Geektowners might like an extra show this week (the normal Geektown Radio will be out on Tuesday as usual). :)

Britain has been crying out for a film that truly reflects the society we live in; just when many have become disillusioned with the lack diversity in film, along comes the British Comedy Amar Akbar and Tony. Rez Kempton (Amar) and Martin Delaney (Tony) play two Londoners who come from different communities and join together in friendship sharing life?s ups and down along the way.

A Sikh, a Muslim and an Irish Catholic take stock of their lives in contemporary London in Atul Malhotra?s coming of age romantic comedy. The 1970?s Bollywood classic ?Amar Akbar Anthony?, about three brothers separated by circumstance, has inspired the title of this British film about three friends driven apart by circumstance. The film explores the predicaments that face its lead trio ? Amar (Rez Kempton) is a Sikh whose promising career gets derailed, Tony (Martin Delaney) is in love with the wrong woman, while Akbar (Sam Vincenti) is an ambitious charmer with the gift of the gab. Despite its Indian-origin characters, the 93-minute movie is a serio-comic exploration of ambition being thwarted by external factors. The characters m

Geektown Podcast 27: Game Developer Daniel Linssen ? The Sun And Moon

http://youtu.be/l9isws7KJ_o

This week I had a chat with indie game developer Daniel Linssen about his upcoming Steam release 'The Sun And Moon'.

Australia based Daniel won 'Ludum Dare 29', with this platformer that has a unique mechanic: you can dive into the ground. Momentum is conserved but gravity is reversed, letting you fling yourself high into the air or deep beneath the surface. The goal is always straightforward - collect the three orbs in the level and jump into the wormhole - but spikes, endless drops and impossible heights make this more and more difficult.

Since those days, he's worked across the industry on games such Theme Park, Startopia, Grand Theft Auto IV and Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes. Now based in Australia with his own company (Five Lives Studios), he's developing a new game, which most people consider to be the 'spiritual successor' to the Syndicate series - Satellite Reign.

After a sucessful Kickstarter campaign, Satellite Reign is due to arrive on Steam Early Access in December 2014, where you'll be able guide your own team of agents to help free the masses from the stranglehold of the mega-corporations... or to take control for yourself...

Geektown Podcast 25: A Brief History of Time Travel

This week, we spoke to Wanda Bertram, the producer of a newly funded Kickstarter documentary called A Brief History of Time Travel: A Mindbending Documentary!

Over the past 3 years, director Gisella Bustillos and her team have been interviewing personalities like Bill Nye ("the Science Guy"), legendary game designer Tim Schafer and Robopocalypse author Daniel Wilson about time travel, and how it relates to pop culture and science.

Time travel is one of the most contagious ideas in science fiction. In a society where time is a unit of value and instant gratification is prized, the idea of traveling through time offers a means of escape. And our obsession with time travel is growing: in the last decade, it's appeared more than ever in books, movies, and pop culture. What makes time travel so powerful that it resonates in each of us, and to what lengths are we going today to make it a reality?

A Brief History of Time Travel is the biography of an idea, chasing time travel from the ancient Mahabharata to the streets of Los Angeles. For people of all ages and backgrounds, it's an odyssey through the imagination and a discovery of kindred spirits.

Although the Kickstarter is now fully funded, you can still get involved by going to their website and making a donation, or find out more on their Facebook page.

http://youtu.be/sXRpz-Mcz7k

This week we had the chance to have a chat with the actor Harry Treadaway about his new movie Honeymoon, and his role as Victor Frankenstein in Sky Atlantic's brilliant Penny Dreadful.

Honeymoon is a psychological horror starring Harry and Game Of Thrones' Rose Leslie (Ygritte - you know nuffin Jon Snow!), as newlywed couple Paul and Bea, who set off to Bea's family cabin for a romantic honeymoon getaway... As you might expect when 2 people decide to take a romantic trip, alone, into a cabin in a dense woodland, things start to go a bit awry, as Bea's behaviour becomes more and more strange, and thinks go from 'a little off', to 'full on crazy!'

Harry has been acting since 2005, and is currently starring as Victor Frankenstein in Penny Dreadful, but you may also have seen him playing Joy Division drummer Stephen Morris in the critically acclaimed 'Control'. He also appeared in the recent Lone Ranger remake and and the brilliantly named Cockneys vs Zombies.

Geektown Podcast 17: Interview with Director Luke Massey

http://youtu.be/vJI-KXARcGg

This week, we've been talking to film director Luke Massey about his first feature, which is out now in the UK called 'The Captive' (aka Armistice).

The movie stars Joseph Morgan, who you'll probably know best as Niklaus Mikaelson in the excellent Vampire Diaries and The Originals, and  co-stars Matt Ryan, who's about to appear as the lead in NBC's new tv show Constantine (although you may recognise him as the voice of Edward Kenway in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag).

Royal Marine A.J Budd (Joseph Morgan ? Vampire Diaries, Immortals) awakes in a mysterious house and is forced to fight for his life everyday against grotesque inhuman opponents. Trapped alone in an unchanging prison of unbreakable routines, he must kill every day or die himself. As days stretch into years, the isolation and unceasing violence threaten his very soul.

The Captive is a gripping, brutal, psychological film with a supernatural edge that charts one man?s fight to preserve his humanity and sanity over years of terrible imprisonment.

Geektown Podcast 12: Interview with the Ladies Of Sleepy Hollow

Whilst at Birmingham Comic Con this weekend, I had the opportunity to sit in on a round table discussion with the ladies from Sleepy Hollow, including Nicole Beharie (Lt. Abbie Mills, the police partner of Tom Mison's Ichabod Crane), Katia Winter (Katrina Crane - Ichabod's wife, who's stuck in purgatory), and Lyndie Greenwood (Jenny Mills, the kick-ass sister of Abbie).

Sleepy Hollow is a modern day retelling of the classic Washington Irving story of Ichabod Crane, and his encounter with the Headless Horseman. In this version however, it's Ichabod who beheads the horseman, only to be 'killed' in the process. Skip forward to modern day, and Crane awakes to find himself buried in a cave, a man out of time... After befriending Lt. Abbie Mills, the pair discover they are prophesied to be the 'two witnesses' to the Apocalypse. Deciding that's probably not the best job in the world, the duo battle to quash the oncoming evil, and prevent the end of days.

Sleepy Hollow has recently finished airing on Universal in the UK, and is due back for a 2nd season in the Autumn.

Geektown Podcast 11: Interview with Warwick Davis

Thanks to the lovely folk at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, last week we got the chance to talk to the man, the legend, that is Warwick Davis!

Warwick is of course best know for playing Wicket in Star Wars, Willow in Willow, Professor Flitwick in Harry Potter, and a rather warped version of himself in BBC's Life's Too Short. However, he's currently touring the UK with his newly formed 'Reduced Height Theatre Company', which, as the name rather suggests, is the first theatre company made up entirely of actors of a reduced height!

Their first project is a performance of 'See How They Run', a farce by Philip King. As you'd expect from a farce, it has mistaken identity, horseplay,  improbable situations, and of course, lots of doors and vicars!

See How They Run will be at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry - 3rd - 8th of March, then all over the country till May 10th.

For more information and to buy tickets for the performance at the Belgrade Theatre click here, or for the full touring schedule click here.

Geektown Podcast Extra: Yonderland Interview with Ben Willbond

http://youtu.be/bTzA9NAz9cc

To help celebrate the release of Sky 1's excellent puppet fantasy show Yonderland on DVD on the 17th February 2014, we've got a special little bonus interview with one of the show's stars - Ben Willbond.

Ben of course was part of the Horrible Histories team, but has also starred in BBC's Rev, and The Thick Of It, and Channel 4's Black Books.

Yonderland stars the cast of BBC's Horrible Histories, and takes mum Debbie Maddox (Howe-Douglas) on an unexpected journey to an extraordinary world inhabited by a collection of eccentric and usually idiotic characters with only an Elf (and his grumpy stick 'Nick') by her side to guide her. The show has a mix of actors who play multiple parts, and the puppetry genius of long-time Jim Henson collaborators, Baker Coogan.

We previously spoke to the cast just before Yonderland aired on Sky 1, and if you want to hear that interview, you can find it on the Yonderland show page here and we also spoke to Martha and Larry recently, which you can hear here.

For our first podcast of the new year, we got to talk to Ron Newcomb about his new movie Rise of the Fellowship.

Rise of the Fellowship is not so much a parody, but more a love letter to all things Tolkien. It centres around Randell, a game store employee and avid gamer, who decides to take on an 'epic journey' to compete in a Lord of the Rings Online gaming competition in Florida along with a group of friends. During their 'quest' they lose one of their most precious possessions and must display depths of bravery and heroism that they never thought possible. With the aid of some unexpected allies along the way, the companions fiercely look for certainty that they can reach their destination...

In the interview, we talk to Ron about the process of getting permission to create and use actual LotRO game footage for the film, as well as creating independent movies, and the state of the US movie industry in general. Ron has produced a number of independent features including Rise of the Fellowship, which won the GenCon 2012 Film Festival. We also discuss his upcoming project The Rangers.

Geektown Podcast 02 : Interview with composer iZLER!

In this new podcast, we're chatting to iZLER, the composer of the hit US tv show Revenge (airing on E4 in the UK), and the US version of Shameless.

iZLER is a UK native, and began his musical career as part of Robbie Williams' band. Now as a television composer, iZLER uses full orchestras for his Revenge compositions, which is increasingly rare in a medium dominated by sample-scores. The orchestras average 50 musicians. This season (the show's second season) he is also incorporating many non-orchestral, studio instruments, which he plays himself. For season two, he's created many new musical themes and moments but this is perhaps best seen in the episode titled "Sacrifice" which for the episode, iZLER based the music off of the rhythm of the Morse code for S.O.S. so that the music was subtly suggesting the episodes dramatic end... He is truly doing his best work on the show this season.

Aside from "Revenge", iZLER has written score and songs for numerous films and TV shows including ER, and the brilliant but short-lived Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. His song "Superblind" appears on Robbie Williams? multi-platinum album Reality Killed the Video Star, which was produced by Trevor Horn and based on iZLER's original production and orchestral arrangement.

iZLER started his career as a touring musician and has toured, recorded and written with artists,
